The Choir of St Francis of Assisi at
Welwyn Garden City was established in 1935 when the present Church was built. As was often the case in this period,
it consisted of ladies, girls and boys singing the top (or soprano) line and men and ladies singing the lower parts (alto, tenor and bass).
In 1964 the make-up of the choir was changed to boys and men only.

Under the next three Choirmasters - Malcolm Warwick, Andrew Bruce and Richard
Harrison - this all-male tradition was developed gaining widespread recognition both within Welwyn Garden City and in many Cathedrals and churches throughout the country.
In recent years visits have been made to Exeter, St Albans, Ripon, Southwell, Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Chichester, Norwich, Lincoln, Hereford and Salisbury
Cathedrals, Keble College Oxford, St Mary's Collegiate Church Warwick, Brentwood and Berkhamsted Parish
Churches and Beddington Parish Church near Croydon. In September 1996 the choir sang at Ely as part of
The Ely Experience (a weekend festival hosted by the Dean and Chapter). The boys took part in a performance of
Carmina Burana in March 1995 and the choir sang live on Radio 4 at Easter.
At Exeter Cathedral
In addition to the main choir, a mixed adult choir - The St. Francis Singers - was formed in
1993 by Emma Harrison (Richard's wife). The Singers lead services once a month at
St Francis using a wide range of music both traditional and modern.
Robin Coxon (the Organist)
has been at St Francis Church
since 1976. He was a chorister at Durham Cathedral and holds the Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists. In addition to his work at the church he performs recitals at various venues in the area.
A small group of instrumentalists and singers regularly lead the more informal
services at 11.15am weekly and on the first Sunday of the month at 6.00pm.
St Francis is fortunate to have such a dedicated and large group of musicians, many of whom are professionals.

The current Director of Music, Andrew Crookall,
was appointed in October
1999 after a year training on the Theology, Music and Worship course at London Bible College. Andrew leads the music at most of the services at
St Francis, conducting both choirs and leading the music group on either keyboard or piano. His compositions and arrangements are frequently used in both formal and informal worship.
