Q: " I have
had a combination boiler installed, but my plumber tells me
that I
have to have an electric shower. Is this the best type of
shower
that I can have ?"
A: A combination
boiler, as well as direct water heaters, provide different
pressures
on the hot and cold water supplies, but can provide a very
powerful
shower if the correct type of shower valve is used. There
are two
types of shower valves which are suitable for this type of
water system,
the first being a thermostatic valve and the second being
a pressure
equalising valve. The advantage of a thermostatic valve is
that most
have a seperate water flow control, which allows the setting
of the
water temperature to be left in a set position, while the shower
is turned
on and off.
Q: " I have
insufficient head of water from my cold water header tank
to give
a suitable shower. Do I have to have an electric shower?"
A: An electric
is only one solution and it provides the least effective
shower.
Two other types of showers are the Trevi Boost and a
pumped
shower. The Trevi Boost shower valve uses your mains
cold water
supply to harness the pressure to increase the strength of
your hot
water flow by means of the Venturi Principle. This gives
the performance
of a power shower, without the use of a pump.
In order
to provide this performance, the Trevi Boost valve
requires
a mains water supply of at least 1.5bar pressure, a
hot water
supply of at least 65degreesC and a hot water head
between
-0.5metres minimum and 3.0 metres maximum.
The second
option of installing a pumped shower will give a
similar
performance to the Trevi Boost, but may require the addition
of a 'negative
head switch' in order to turn on the pump, if the
bottom
of the cold water header tank is below the position of
the shower
head.
Q: " I want
to have a powerful shower installed over my bath, but I
I cannot
find a bath screen which is unlikely to prevent some
leakage
of water onto my floor. Is there any type of bath
screen
that can fully fold away, yet can be used with a
powerful
shower?"
A: Yes,
the Showerplus range of baths and fold away shower enclosures
by Selecta
are suitable for any type of shower valve. The Showerplus
baths have
a moulded shoulder which ensure that no water can leak
onto the
bathroom floor.

Q: " I wish to have a traditional style shower valve with a fixed riser, arm
a rose. I have 1metre head of cold water from my header tank,
is this sufficient for this type of shower valve?"
A: It is unlikely that there is enough pressure to fully fill the rose from
1metre head of water. It is usually preferable to use a shower pump
in order to boost the pressure through this type of shower valve. It is
important when considering the positioning of a shower pump, that
the pump should be not placed above the shower head so as to ensure
that the pump does not suffer from air locking.
