STEAM IN PARADISE 2005 ZAFRA REPORT part 1

PART 2.

427 Quintin Banderas.

1755 was active on pilot duties. 1547 & 1548 are dumped at the 1st LP SW of the mill.

428 Marcelo Salado.

The museum’s operational fleet was confined to 1343 and 1549.

433 Marta Abreu.

Fireless 1239 stored out of use.

434 Panchito Gomez Toro.

1626 not used this year.

438 Ramon Ponciano.

1552 was not available for tourist duties this year. Also the FCC line to Sopimpa is not deemed fit across the high viaducts now for even railcar traffic.

440 Ifrain Alfonso.

Most of the line work was diesel (class 37’s, not 38’s this year), but 1636 was available for use on pilot or line duties.

441 Diez de Octubre.

1639 saw use on pilot and line duties through to mill 440 before suffering problems in March.

443 Pepito Tey.

The tourist operation has closed. Bedevilled by political problems with the Provincial authorities and with the operation at Mal Tiempo already up and running. A sad end for an enthusiastic and determined group of people, only trying to do the best for their closed mill.

503 Orlando Gonzales Ramirez.

1732 was reported to have been available.

504 Ecuador.

1904 saw duties on line work, but was deemed unavailable for tourist trains..

515 Ciro Redondo.

1826 and 1829 in use on pilot and line duties. Other locos dumped or derelict.

517 Patria.

The museum operation now has 1461 available for the tourist train, which is regularly in use with clients from Cayo Coco. 1563 & 1564 await overhaul. Fireless 1169 from 506 is a static exhibit.

635 Rafael Freyre.

The museum operation has got regular steam hauled service trains again. The devastating drought in this part of Cuba, which has closed most of the exclusive ‘all-inclusive’ hotels between Guardalavaca and the adjacent Playas, has brought a water train into regular operation to serve the villages at Altuna and Progresso. Operating out one day and back the next, the water trains usually consist of four tanks. Problems with the railcars have also led to some steam hauled passenger trains for the locals, utilising the tourist train stock for seating. 1387 has been overhauled. 1882 built Baldwin 0-6-0 No.1 and Baldwin 2-8-0 No.1388 both in the pre-Revolutionary markings of Central Santa Lucia are the other operational locos. 1391 has taken up residence on the plinth.

Parque Lenin.

Operating with 1350. 1373 & 1 are present. 2 & 3 are dumped at the back of the shed.

Hershey.

Brill cars 3006 and 3009 are still operational, although all other traffic is worked by the Barcelona units and diesels on freights.

Local trains.

The Santa Clara – University shuttle is running again after a number of years absence.

Many local trains are still regularly cancelled for any of a number of reasons. Even for services such as the Havana – Cienfuegos passenger, there is no available cover for the locomotive used on the service. If it fails, the service does not run again until it is fixed!
