WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. military has
been discussing the prospect of establishing bases in North Africa.
A report by the Washington-based Heritage Foundation said the U.S. European Command has sought to establish a presence in at least two North African states. The report cited Morocco and Tunisia. "The command is also looking at establishing basing arrangements in countries like Tunisia and Morocco so that U.S. forces can deploy to the continent more effectively if American troops are required," the report, entitled "U.S. Military Assistance for Africa: A Better Solution," said. Authored by James Carafano and Nile Gardiner, the report said the U.S. military has been considering reorganizing its command structure in North Africa and the rest of the continent. Currently, the continent is divided between the European Command, or Eucom, and Central Command. Eucom is responsible for the U.S. military presence in most of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa while Centcom is responsible for most of North Africa.
