Brussels, Belgium-AP -- The Cold War is over. The war on terrorism may just
be beginning. And that's why the U-S military is getting ready to make some
major changes in Europe.
Today, Pentagon officials are briefing NATO on a military overhaul that
could move thousands of American troops out of Germany and closer to current
global hot spots.
The German bases offered a pivotal strategic position to the U-S during the
Cold War. But U-S officials have said they now want to shift troops to
places like the Middle East, the Balkans or Central Asia. The idea is to
assemble a smaller, lightly equipped force that can quickly reach a trouble
area.
There are few details coming out of today's briefing and U-S officials
stress that such moves are still in the early stages.
