THE BREWHOUSE LIBRARY is best described as eclectic in its content. For a tiny record company it is quite large. It was initially developed to support the personal interests of Eric Cowell - the founder of BREWHOUSE - and his wife Ray, but since BREWHOUSE was established it has supported the music search and research required to support our record releases.
The music section of the library has its greatest content in traditional and folk music of the British Islands including Ballads, songs, tune books, etc.
Due to a particular interest in the work of Frank Kidson (1855 - 1926) who was Eric's great, great uncle, there is an almost complete set of his published works and photocopies of many manuscripts in the Kidson collection. In addition there is family material.
The library also has an extensive collection of musical reference books including four editions of Grove's Dictionary of Music.
The musical section is supported by collections of books on Myth and Legend, Folk Custom, Geography, Art, Literature, Biography, Dictionaries, etc. There is also an extensive section on books about Sea Shanties, Sailor Songs, Sailing Ships, Seamanship, etc.
THE BREWHOUSE LIBRARY is principally used for 'in house' research to support our record releases and song books, etc. We sometimes do song search and research for other record companies and musicians. This is usually on a commercial basis, but fees are sometimes waived for good causes.
